Welcome To Natures Edge Campground. We are a Family, Environment & Nature Orientated Friendly Campground & "Back to Nature Play Zone. Located on 50 acres in the middle of New Zealands Largest Scenic Reserve alongside the pristine Waioeka River at New Zealands Best Spot!
Our focus is having natural stuff to do to get back to nature through camping, play, exercise & activity & learn an appreciation for the environment. You will experience new things about the environment, nature, country life & yourself while here. It's a "Real World" experience & refreshing break from the "technology world". We aren't just a campground we're an adventure with heaps to do! Activities.
Camp sites consist of a tent width with river view & as much room as you need deep so your not packed in like sardines. There is ample room for tents, caravans, motor-homes etc as we have over 50 acres to camp. The camp site is 500 meters off the road so there is no traffic noise & very secure especially compared to similar remote DOC sites. The site is available for families, couples, groups, schools, youth groups, guides & scouts in a serene setting. Surround by numerous native birds where you go to sleep with the sound of the morporks & awake with the sounds of nature around you! The campground has basic natural amenities. There is plenty of pure fresh running drinking water outlets available. There are several basins to wash dishes & hands & toilets that are cleaned thoroughly morning, noon & night as we realise we are only as good as our clean toilets! There is an enclosed shower stall with running water & a pulley to hang a solar shower.
We are sheltered from the wind & blowing sand compared to the beach & don't have the fear of sharks, rip currents, tsunamis, false tsunamis warnings, biting crabs, stinging jelli fish, sting-rays, sand that gets everywhere & salt water that dries out & ages your skin. You can actually relax when your kids are in the water here! According to Environment B.O.P the Waioeka river maximum temperature over the last 12 months is approx 3 degrees warmer than the local beaches! We do have numerous swimming holes with pure crystal clear drinkable slow moving water. Much safer than the unpredictable ocean & far healthier than chemical/body waste tainted swimming pools other campgrounds actually promote as there focal point!!! YUK! There are kayaks to use FREE of charge at the camp area as well as tubes, boggie boards & bikes. Even though it feels like we are in the middle of nowhere we are only 10 minutes away from some of the nicest sandy beaches in NZ & the town of Opotiki that has all your supplies & amenities.
Environmental/Family Friendly Campground:
We are a environment friendly campground with no powered sites or rubbish collection. We DO NOT allow hunting, fishing, the killing of anything or burning of rubbish here. Reference from Chris Barfoot, Family Camp Organiser, Alpine Sports Club:
We have no hesitation in commending the camping site to all those who like us require only simple facilities and love to enjoy the natural amenities of bush, river, mountains and sea. In the 41 camps the club has organised, this site has provided one of the most memorable experiences.
