Top of the Waioekas at Natures Edge

Experience the breathtaking scenery from the rarely experienced “top of the Waioekas”.

These mountain tops are full of history with the original local Maori tribes using them as lookout viewpoints & routes of travel. This is the only walk in the gorge that offers a look down on New Zealands Largest Scenic Reserve & the pristine Waioeka River, across the mountain tops & out to the ocean.

The walk starts with a river crossing by either wading of dingy. Then there is a steep rise of approx 500 meters before it levels out into a gradual consistent rise to about 1000 meters. The walk is about approximately 4 km. There is a grassy area at the top for a picnic & to take in the scenery. This walk is strongly advised for physically capable people as it is unguided, steep & totally natural with no steps or rails & natural obstacles. This unique walk is only available for guests staying at New Zealands Best Spot.
