Experience the breathtaking scenery from the rarely experienced “top of the Waioekas”.
These mountain tops are full of history with the original local Maori tribes using them as lookout viewpoints & routes of travel. This is the only walk in the gorge that offers a look down on New Zealands Largest Scenic Reserve & the pristine Waioeka River, across the mountain tops & out to the ocean.
The walk starts with a river crossing by either wading of dingy. Then there is a steep rise of approx 500 meters before it levels out into a gradual consistent rise to about 1000 meters. The walk is about approximately 4 km.
There is a grassy area at the top for a picnic & to take in the scenery. This walk is strongly advised for physically capable people as it is unguided, steep & totally natural with no steps or rails & natural obstacles. This unique walk is only available for guests staying at New Zealands Best Spot.
